“EYE will devour everything in SIGHT,” is a solo exhibition of Oakland artist Mats Stromberg’s new paintings and prints  inside Hangar 18, artist Chuck Sperry’s screen printing studio in West Oakland this month, and includes a new series of lenticular works on view for the first time. This exhibition is part of the ongoing H18 Project series that Sperry presents in his unique space showcasing work by artists with whom he has collaborated in the past or by whom he has been influenced.

Stromberg’s style is reminiscent of the comic books that inspired him to become an artist when he was young, and lends to his art an iconic Pop Art aesthetic. The artist imbues this with a witty, surrealist imagination and thought-provoking subversion of the genre, which makes his work special and unique. Mats paints, prints and continues to publish hand-made, screen printed art comics with titles like: Ragu, Prego, S’not for Kids, Sicko, Eyesore, Asiaddict, and the upcoming Burmese Daze. Stromberg is also a prolific mural artist, having just finished a large mural in Clarion Alley in late 2013. One of his murals, made in 1995, graces the cover of Street Art San Francisco: Mission Muralismo, widely regarded as the encyclopedia of San Francisco Mural Art and Street Art.

Mats Stromberg, “EYE will devour everything in SIGHT” will be on view at Hangar 18 Studio Gallery, 1428 34th Street  by appointment only through February 28.
