Betti Ono is pleased to present Black Women Over Breathing, a group exhibition of emerging Black Women artists. Co-curated by Adrian O. Walker and Danielle McCoy, this group show pays homage to all who are Black women-identified. The “Black Women Over Breathing” exhibition runs from October 6, 2017 – January 5, 2018.

Imagine a world without Black women: from Edmonia Lewis and Audre Lorde, to Nina Simone and Michelle Obama, these women and those like them—our mothers, aunts, sisters, partners, and friends—are courageous, bold, ambitious, and intelligent. They fought for our lives and for our right to express as we may, to love as we do, and to exist as we are. Simply put, without Black women, we wouldn’t be breathing.

Chandra Cerrito Contemporary is pleased to announce two concurrent solo exhibitions of works by Bay Area artists Connie Goldman and Mikey Kelly from October 6 to November 16, 2017.  Paintings by these two Bay Area artists explore contemporary abstraction and color as well as motion, in both metaphorical or optical terms.

Connie Goldman’s new body of work entitled Genea, further explores the “tenuous equilibrium” in which human beings and everything in the universe exist.  “Genea,” from the Greek, means “to become, to emerge, to transition from one point to another.”  It suggests change and growth, which are inextricably linked.

Through a restrained formal language of color planes, angular shapes, and straight lines, Goldman’s oil paintings on dimensional panels express subtle shifts and implied movement, however glacial its pace.  Shapes fold on themselves, lines dart through to connect discrete planes or segment monochromatic ones, surfaces are faceted, jutting forward and back.  Colors are both in tension and in harmony with one another at the same time.

These are slow paintings–slow in the making as well as in the viewing.  A quick glance may register two planes when there is actually a single one in two tones.  Something seen first as a shadow may reveal itself to be a recessed portion of the painted object.  Surprising colors on the edges offer delightful moments of discovery.  What may first seem simple and quiet becomes complex and energized, or vice versa.  Even the experience of these works does not stay the same.

Mikey Kelly’s Vibrate highlights new work by Bay Area artist Mikey Kelly.  Kelly’s recent acrylic paintings continue his interest in process-driven linear compositions that are optically charged. Reminiscent of woven textiles and Op Art by artists like Carlos Cruz-Diez, Gilbert Hsiao, and Susie Rosmarin, his dynamic fields of interference patterns come alive with a viewer’s interaction.  This experiential and perceptual confrontation seems to underlie Kelly’s motivations and keep the viewer actively engaged.

For many years, Kelly has utilized pre-determined mathematical patterns, or algorithms, that dictate the color and angle of each painted or drawn line to create

unpredictable visual patterns.  His new paintings use ciphers that encode language as a means to arrive at compositions.  Interested in, as Kelly describes it, “spirituality hacking,” his paintings reference texts by spiritual leaders like Ram Dass and Meher Baba, New Age phrases like “affirmations,” and tools of Eastern religion like “mantras.”  Each work is a prayer manifesting positivity.  In fact, circular canvases are rotated like a prayer wheel as part of their making.  While Kelly considers a diverse array of spiritual topics intellectually and as a structural device, he also embodies the practices they espouse through a necessarily sustained, repetitive painting process.  In the end, slowly accumulated energy is barely contained, radiating through the painted surface.

About the Artists

Connie Goldman was born in El Paso, TX and lives in Petaluma, CA.  She earned an MFA in painting and drawing from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.  Goldman’s work has been exhibited internationally, including in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Holland, New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.  Her work is in public and private collections including the Laguna Beach Art Museum, the El Paso Museum of Art, and Neiman Marcus.  Goldman taught at San Francisco State University, San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts, and Santa Rosa Junior College for the better part of two decades.  This is Goldman’s second solo exhibition at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary.

Mikey Kelly lives and works in Napa, CA.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from University of Oregon in Eugene, OR and his Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI.  Kelly’s work has been exhibited nationally, including at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, Berkeley Art Center, and San Francisco Art Market in northern

California; Franklin Parrasch Gallery in New York City; and Miami Project in Miami.  His work is in the collections of the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, MI, University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Neiman Marcus in Troy, MI.  Kelly has been awarded artist residencies at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley and the Lucid Art Foundation in Inverness.  This is Kelly’s second solo exhibition at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary.

“As a native of California, the clay state, I work with clay from the earth to defend the earth.

I love the clay process, pushing its limits, revealing its innate qualities, turning mud to stone. I feel a passionate urgency to conjure art in this revolutionary time and value clay’s infinite potential. mirroring our own.

In this show, I am seeking creative and community balance. My intention is to share work that stirs the visceral will to face our many challenges, with joy, in the beauty that is us and all other life. Beauty that is under our feet and setting sail at our backs.

The masterpiece of nature is my source and anchor, in wild places, and at home in East Oakland. I am inspired by its no-waste complexity. It can be a guide to us, as artists and citizens, by its responses to our actions.

Clay has a memory. It records your fingerprints and all the ways you held it in your hands. Our earth has a memory and responds to our manipulations. My work in clay draws from the knowledge that everything…our food, home, clothes, tools, toys all come from the ‘clay’ of the earth and the hope that we will seek solutions in nature-based knowledge to grow, gather, love & consume leaving the smallest fingerprint.

Transmission Gallery is pleased to present Maija Peeples-Bright: EnorMoose Mountains and Peacock Peaks, a solo exhibition of paintings and ceramics featuring a selection of work spanning five decades, with a special showing of objects and artifacts by Maija’s circle at the Candy Store Gallery, including Robert Arneson, Clayton Bailey, Roy De Forest, David Gilhooly, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, and Peter Vandenberg.

Maija Peeples-Bright (aka Maija Zack, Maija Woof, Maija Peeples) was born in Latvia in 1942, and moved to the US as a refugee with her family at age nine. As a math major at UC Davis in the 60’s she rounded out her graduation requirements by taking a first art class, which happened to be taught by William T. Wiley. Smitten by the process, she changed majors launching into a long career as an artist.

In the late 60’s and Maija and, then husband, David Zack, regularly hosted young artists, the likes of Joan Brown, Manuel Neri, Bruce Connor and the Candy Store Gallery crew, in their wildly colored San Francisco Victorian, the Rainbow House. In its day, the Rainbow house was well known for the extravagant murals she painted on the walls and ceilings throughout as well as for her project of painting the exterior using every color made by Dutch Boy.

Peeples-Bright showed at the Candy Store Gallery, in Folsom, for more than two decades in numerous solo exhibitions, as well as with other Candy Store Gallery regulars, now well known to the art world.

In her career beyond the Candy Store, Peeples-Bright continues to pursue an irreverent and spirited aesthetic, expounding on her signature colorful critters and wild kingdom imagery in an outpouring of paintings and ceramic pieces. Her studio practice continues to this day, with her most recent painting, EnorMOOSE Everest included in this exhibition.

, curated by Matt Sussman, presents art from the homes of Bay Area writers Dodie Bellamy, Bruce Boone, Robert Glück, Kevin Killian, and Jocelyn Saidenberg.

Instigators and practitioners of what has come to be called New Narrative writing, these individuals have also been vital participants in the Bay Area’s visual arts communities. Their frequent collaborations with artists have included publishing ventures, performances, and exhibitions, alongside a steady output of writing on visual art, including essays, profiles, and reviews. The pieces in Objects of Mutual Affection provide a record of the overlapping social and creative worlds in which these activities have taken place. Filled… with mementos of decades-long friendships, art world crushes, serendipitous encounters, and departed lovers, Objects of Mutual Affection is both an extended family portrait of a creative community and a reconsideration of “collecting” as something other than a private or financial enterprise.

The exhibition is supported by and will coincide with the conference Communal Presence: New Narrative Writing Today, at the University of California, Berkeley from October 13-15, which considers the legacy of New Narrative writing in both the Bay Area and abroad. For more details, visit

Every year we honor the memory of our loved ones. We celebrate their lives and legacy, not their deaths. We are as a community dealing with the many losses of family and friends both near and far, in all of the recent disasters and recent tragedies. Let’s get together to help each other through this difficult time.

We invite you to join us for an opening reception Oct 14th, from 5-8pm. Coffee drinks and pan de muerto in the cafe. We also hope to have a blessing and traditional danzantes and a spoken word performance, DJ and light refreshments.

A community altar will be open to the community to place mementos, photos, flowers, etc. in memory of their loved ones.

For this exhibition, Alvarez-Perez imagines the gallery as a kind of divination room, presenting a series of new photographs along with related objects –science fiction books, religious iconography, drug paraphernalia, and divination tools—that allude to the many ways we try to make meaning of the world and predict what’s to come.

Among the objects are works made by artists Alvarez-Perez invited to contribute; John Zappas (wooden ash trays), Sarah Cathers (pe…ndulum dousers), and Anna Nearburg (stone and metal book ends). The objects are presented on shelves and on a table in the center of the gallery, where three coins and a copy of the I Ching invite visitors to cast and read their own hexagrams. Two Eames chairs are also provided for visitors to sit and read the books presented. As the artist notes, Eames’ son called it the “chair of tomorrow.”

Attempting to divine the future is a universal endeavor with ancient roots that feels particularly compelling given the political uncertainty of our times. Alvarez-Perez invites viewers to consider the various approaches he presents—from chance methods and altered states to the reading of novels and visual art—as valid forms of meaning-making that, while elusive, can be deeply nourishing and informative.

In Garden 2 Oakland artist Terry Dunn presents his latest work, three-dimensional wall pieces.  Individual carved and painted elements are assembled and evolved into whimsical and evocative concoctions.  In response to a sense of dread due to the current destructive impact of humans on the natural world, Dunn has turned to the exuberant beauty of nature for inspiration and solace.  By closely observing plants, and in particular flowers, he has reinvented nature and created a fantastic and playful botanical world.

Terry Dunn was born in Portland, Oregon.  He earned his BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 1982.  He has resided in the Bay Area since then.  His work has been exhibited in the Bay Area, the Pacific Northwest and New York City.  This is his sixth solo exhibition at Mercury 20 Gallery.

Keith Boadwee and Steve Hurd first met in 1987 at UCLA. Boadwee was a student in Paul McCarthy’s class and Hurd was the teaching assistant. I’d like to imagine it was art love at first sight. They shared a mutual admiration for German Expressionist painters and an affinity for provocation, a desire to milk a reaction out of their classmates and the world at large. These traits, along with an unflinching respect for each other’s art practice, would be the glue to bind them together for decades to come.

For their two person exhibition at City Limits, Keith Boadwee will be showing a table overflowing with hund…reds of unique drawings that viewers will be able to handle themselves. Some of the drawings are studies for larger paintings, but the majority function as discrete objects. The table serves to map Boadwee’s brain, and subsequently, his art practice. In Boadwee’s world, the drawings may depict a scatalogical vignette, an erotic encounter between mythical beasts, or a combination of both. They are funny, irreverent, and full of just enough mordant humor to make one laugh and cringe with delight.

With a series of new sculptures and paintings, Steve Hurd continues his practice of using found images and objects to decipher the American experience of mass culture. For Rolling Rock, a new sculpture, Hurd has assembled beer cans into the form of a peace sign. The sculpture probes the psyche of not only the American hippie, but possibly that of beer drinkers and militant recyclists. The sheen of nonviolence is not unlike the cans’ aluminum exterior, but beneath it, we find a bubbly, highly carbonated mixture of thoughts and emotions. In Kingdom Under Attack, Hurd has made a painting with a substrate of broken egg shells. The painted image, rendered as expertly as one could on such a precarious, uneven surface, is derived from a medieval woodcut print of a castle under siege. The painting seems allegorical, perhaps a reference to the fragility of the male American ego? I suppose you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.

Keith Boadwee (b. 1961 Meridian, MS) lives and works in Emeryville, CA. He received a BA from UCLA in 1989 and an MFA from UC Berkeley in 2000. He has had solo exhibitions at Shoot the Lobster (New York), Brennan and Griffin (New York), Salzburger Kunstverein Austria (a collaborative project with AA Bronson), Hacienda (Zurich), Paradise Garage (Venice, CA), ROCKSBOX Fine Art (Portland, OR), White Columns (New York), and Peres Projects (Los Angeles), among others. This summer he had a solo exhibition at Atelier 34 Zero Museum (Brussels). Boadwee taught at California College of the Arts from 2004-15 and San Francisco Art Institute from 2005-16 and in the coming year will be teaching at Maine College of Art and UC San Diego.
Steve Hurd (b. 1956 Washington D.C.) lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1979 and later came to Los Angeles where he studied with Chris Burden, Paul McCarthy, and Mike Kelley at UCLA. There he received a Masters of Fine Arts in the New Genre Department in 1988. He has shown individually at Galerie Vedovi (Brussels), Jack Tilton Gallery (New York), Dan Bernier Gallery (Los Angeles) and Rosamund Felsen Gallery (Los Angeles.). He was the recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship in 2005 and the Los Angeles Artist Fellowship Laboratory and the City of Los Angeles Individual Artist Fellowship in 2012.

Troy Lovegates, widely known as “OTHER”, is an artist currently based in Oakland, CA. His works are heavily patterned and saturated with hyper color. With a knack for the use of found materials and the unification of wildly disparate elements, both material and aesthetic, Lovegates uses everything from spray paint, oil stick, water color, acrylic, and ink to create works on canvas and paper as well as wooden sculptures.

A self-described “collector of lost souls,” the artist focuses on the figure as story, building motifs through heavily condensed mark making. The figures in his work are sympathetically drawn from equal parts caricature and realistic observation. Lovegates is constantly revising and adapting previous efforts, reintegrating them into current bodies of work that reflect the history of their making. His hand-carved wooden pieces bring his paintings to life as objects. The powerfully weathered people in his imagery are often real, captured through photographs and observation taken while on his travels over the years. Motivated by his own dreams and nightmares, Troy Lovegates works are emotive arrests of an awe-inspiring imagination.
